SWD coaches agreed as Crotts, a senior pitching standout, was selected as the district player of the year. The Cavalier ace also was named Region IV Co-Player of the Year along with Tunstall shortstop Cody Holder.
“Adam is the kind of player that is willing to do whatever it takes for the team and he always put the team before himself,” Carroll County head baseball coach Joe Tompkins said. “He is a tremendous kid to coach and he did a tremendous job for us.”
Crotts led Carroll County (16-7) in almost every category on the mound as he compiled a 6-1 record and won numerous big games for the Cavaliers, who finished second in the district in the regular season before reaching the SWD Tournament championship game. His 1.31 Earned Run Average was among the best in the entire Timesland (The Roanoke Times’ coverage area). Crotts had better than a 5-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio as he whiffed 66 batters compared to just 13 walks in 42.2 innings of work. Opposing batters hit a paltry .187 against Crotts and reached base just 25.4 percent of the time. Crotts gave up just 11 runs all season, only eight of which were earned. He also led the team by far in complete games with five.
Crotts especially rose to the occasion in big games. With a Region IV playoff berth on the line in a SWD Tournament semifinal against Tazewell, Crotts fanned 14 batters and gave up just three hits in a 3-2 Carroll win on May 25. Earlier in the season, he struck out eight and gave up four hits in a 1-0 shutout victory over the Bulldogs. On May 11 against Abingdon, Crotts was one of just two SWD pitchers to beat the Falcons as he struck out 11 and gave up seven hits in a 4-2 Carroll victory. He also whiffed 14 Richlands hitters and gave up just five hits May 4 in an 11-2 Cavalier win.
Crotts also made the All-SWD squad as a second-team outfielder. At the plate, Crotts led team in batting average (.431), RBIs (14) and doubles (8), and finished second in hits (28) and on-base percentage (.500). He also was third on the team in slugging percentage (.585).
Senior center fielder Craig Rosen joined Crotts on the All-SWD first team in addition to being selected to the All-Region IV second team.
Rosen led Carroll County in runs (24), hits (31), and triples (5) in 2010. He also finished second on the team in batting average at .425 (31-for-73) and third in slugging percentage (.616). Rosen also had four doubles, eight RBIs and an on-base percentage of .468.
Abingdon coach Mark Francisco was tabbed as SWD Coach of the Year for leading the Falcons to the SWD regular season and tournament championships. Abingdon and Tazewell led the way in all-district voting with three selection each on the first team.
Five Carroll County players received honorable mention accolades in seniors Adam Nester, Tyler Reavis, Zack Edwards and juniors Dillon Bryant and Jordan Lamb.
A senior first baseman, Nester finished fourth on the team in RBIs (11) while hitting .294 with 15 hits and one home run. At second base, Reavis tied for the team lead in home runs with two and he placed second on the team in runs (22) and RBIs (13). He also led the team by being hit by nine pitches to go along with 16 base hits. A senior third baseman, Edwards tied for second in RBIs (13) to go along with three doubles, one home run, nine runs, and 15 hits.
A junior left fielder, Bryant, hit .340, scored 13 runs, had 16 hits, 8 RBIs, three doubles, one triple and a .447 slugging percentage. A junior right fielder, Lamb tied for the team lead in homers (2) and led the Cavs with a .708 slugging percentage. Lamb also hit .390, scored 13 runs, had 19 hits, 11 RBIs, three doubles, three triples and a .580 on-base percentage.
