The Carroll County Dixie Boys (14 year olds) All-Star season came to an end July 27 in the double-elimination state tournament in South Boston.
After receiving a first-round bye, Carroll opened the tournament with an 11-8 victory over Charlotte County before dropping a 6-4 decision to Halifax County. Carroll then met up with Madison Heights on July 27 in an elimination game.
Carroll got off to a great start, jumping ahead 3-0 in the first inning. Things began to snowball, however, when Madison Heights scored four unearned runs on five errors in the third inning to take a 4-3 advantage. The score stayed that way until the seventh when Madison Heights tacked on three more runs en route to a 7-3 victory.
We just didnt hit the ball very well and we probably had 10 or 11 errors in that game, Carroll head coach Ron Cochran said. In the third inning when we gave up those four unearned runs, all those errors were on the infield. We just didnt play very well, but the two teams that played for the title were the only two teams we lost to.
Cochran said Carroll is loaded with talent and has a good future ahead. Unfortunately, the team just didnt catch all the breaks necessary to win a state championship.
We had a very good team. To win the state, you have to have more than just a good team though. You have to some luck and good fielding and good hitting, Cochran said. Sometimes it doesnt all come together.
