Thanks to a partnership with the New College Institute in Martinsville, the Crossroads Institute of Galax will soon be able to offer a variety of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.

New College Institute, in partnership with several prominent Virginia universities, will be hosting two informational sessions on May 7 at the Crossroads where residents can explore the possibility of earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree by completing their last two years of coursework through the new program.

Seven bachelor’s and two master’s programs will now be offered at Crossroads through the partnership.

Dr. Oliver A. McBride, Executive Director of Crossroads Institute, said the programs complete a dream for the Galax entrepreneurial center.

“One of the hopes that the folks who work in the development of Crossroads Institute had would be it would be a site where educational opportunities would be developed and grown. We have an opportunity in partnership with the New College Institute in Martinsvile to offer some bachelor’s and master’s degree programs here at the Crossroads,” McBride said. “We are very excited about this opportunity to offer these programs in our region and we are very hopeful that anyone who might be interested in exploring the chance to continue their education in any of these areas will visit with folks who will be here next week.”

McBride said the partnership with New College Institute would further strengthen the relationship of Crossroads Institute with Wytheville Community College and other local community colleges.

“These programs offered through the New College Institute are programs that would help someone complete their junior and senior years. For example, a person would have their two years through the community college completed and then they would go into these programs,” McBride said. “So in that way the community college is very much a partner and a part of this. We are very thankful for the opportunities Wytheville Community College is offering in the region.

“This would certainly be a way for our folks to take advantage of what the community college is offering by completing their junior and senior years through these programs.”

Bachelor’s degrees that will be available at the Crossroads through the new partnership include a pair of degrees each from Virginia Commonwealth University (Criminal Justice and Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness) and Norfolk State University (Social Work and Early Childhood Education), Liberal Studies with Elementary Education Licensure through Longwood University, Motorsports Technology through Old Dominion University, and Information Technology through Radford University. Master’s Degrees in Counseling (Old Dominion) and Social Work (Norfolk State) will also be available at the Crossroads.

Two information sessions will take place May 7 at the Crossroads at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Faculty and staff will be available from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. that day to answer questions. Contact Crossroads Institute at (276) 236-0391 for more information.

“In the preliminary contacts we have made with area agencies and school systems, there seems to be a great deal of interest,” McBride said. “We hope it will be demonstrated when the New College Institute representatives are here.”
