Garnett Phillip Burris, Wytheville, VA passed from this life on Monday, April 22, 2013 at his home. He was born September 12, 1944 in Wythe County, a son of Marvin and Eunice White Burris of the Laswell Community. A graduate of Ft. Chiswell High School, Garnett spent many years as a merchant in the Poplar Camp/Jackson Ferry Community. He was employed by Morton International/Rowan Haas the last 17 years of his working life.


A man of great integrity, Garnett fought a long and courageous battle with the effects of both diabetes and heart disease. His earthly journey can be described by II Timothy 4:7: I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: What greater testimony could we leave?


He was preceded in death by his father and mother and older brother, Marvin Clayton “Sonny” Burris, and a brother-in-law, Donald Frazier. Survivors include his wife, Thelma Frazier Burris of the home; two sons, Jeffrey P. Burris, wife Karen and daughter Samantha Jane of Barren Springs; Kevin Brian Burris, wife Sherri, and daughter Abigail Leigh of the Piney community. Abby and Samantha have always been the light of his life. In his words, “My precious granddaughters”, and they love him the same. Sisters: Bessie Burris, Max Meadows; Peggy and Charles Dickerson, Senoia, GA, Gaye Ann and Paul Hundley, Hillsville, Carolyn Burris, Roanoke and Pansy and Terry Sturtevant, Max Meadows. Mother-in-law, Laeula Frazier, Hillsville; Brother-in-law, Jerry L. & Phyllis Frazier, Wilmington, NC; Sister-in-laws: Mary Shank and Christine Bolen both of Hillsville who became his friend and confidant during his lengthy illness. And, a special sister-in-law, Mary Jane Burris, Pulaski. Best friends: Vernon and Dreama Beasley with whom he was blessed to travel to special places and to spend simple times sharing his inner self. Garnett was blessed to have nieces and nephews who knew and loved him for the special man he was, special cousins, other extended family, a wonderful church family at the Riverview Church of God and a host of friends.


Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00pm, April 24, 2013 at Riverview Church of God, Wysor Highway (Route 100), Draper, VA. The funeral service will begin directly following visitation at 8:00pm. Burial will be at the Bethany Cemetery on April 25 at 11:00am. (Exit 24 off I-77, Lead Mines Road, (Route 69), Austinville, VA).
