Gravley earns first-team all-state honors
Having already been named Region IV Player of the Year, Carroll County senior Ryan Gravley has more hoop hardware to add to his impressive collection.
Gravley, who helped guide the Cavaliers to the Region IV championship and a school-record tying 24 wins in 2012-13, has now been selected to the Virginia High School Coaches’ Association first-team all-state squad. Additionally, Gravley has been selected as an alternate for the VHSCA East-West All-Star game in June at Christopher Newport University.
“I think it’s awesome. That is a huge accomplishment for Ryan,” Carroll County head coach Brad Hawks said. “He deserves everything he gets.”
Gravley, the first Carroll County boys’ basketball player to win Region IV Player of the Year honors since Terry Dalton in 1981, is joined on the Group AA first-team by Brandan and B.J. Stith, both of Brunswick, Rockbridge County’s Andrew Rowsey, Millbrook’s Rze Culbreath, Grafton’s Elijah Moore, and Spotwood’s Hyrum Weiler.
“I think it’s a great accomplishment to be on there with all the other great names on that list,” Gravley said. “I feel honored to get it.”
With Gravley’s scoring ability and heady play from the guard position, Carroll County set a new record for best start in school history this past season by going 18-0. The Cavaliers finished a second consecutive undefeated season in Southwest District play en route to the Region IV championship with a 66-48 victory over Salem, the eventual state champion. The Cavs also advanced to the Group AA Tournament for the first time since 1991 this year.
Gravley led the Carroll in scoring and assists with 15.2 points and 4.3 assists per game. He only turned the ball over 35 times all season to finish with a 3.3 assist-to-turnover ratio. Gravley also led the Cavs in free-throw percentage (83.9 percent) and finished third on the team in steals (44) and 3-point percentage, shooting 26.8 percent on 26-of-97 attempts.
Gravley is also the first Carroll boys’ basketball player to earn all-state honors since Terry Dalton was selected to the All-Group AA first team in 1981. Carroll’s Pat Sharp also earned all-state honors in 1980.
