Name: Michael Henley

Family Members: My parents, who live in Hillsville; a sister and her husband, who also live in the Hillsville area; a sister, her husband, and their two children, who live in Mount Airy; and a nephew, his wife, and their two children, who live in Pulaski.

Occupation and why you selected it: I am the new office manager at the Hillsville Police Department. My job allows me to combine my business, technology, and education background along with my work experience to meet the day-to-day responsibilities of the position. It also allows me to support the efforts of Chief Bolen and the HPD officers as they serve the Town of Hillsville.

Where are you from originally: Born and raised in Hillsville. Although early on I did live in Dugspur for a few years.

What clubs, groups and church do you belong: I attend Pine Grove Baptist Church in Dugspur where I am also the church treasurer. I am also an active member of the Virginia Tech Hokie Club.

Education: I hold two associate degrees from Wytheville Community College, a bachelor’s degree from Bluefield College, and a master’s degree from Radford University.

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing what you do now and why: Probably something related to my background in business, technology, and education. Accounting, bookkeeping, information/office technology or office applications come to mind. I find it rewarding when a set of my financial records are in balance with all money accounted for, or when I can use technology to help solve an office problem or to make an office procedure more efficient.

What is something most people don’t know about you? I was an intramural tennis champion during my stay at Bluefield College.

Favorite food: Definitely Subway, especially their Subway Club Sandwich.

Favorite writer and/or book: Definitely the Bible first; I also like Ted Dekker.

Favorite music and/or performer: I mainly listen to Southern Gospel music and Q99’s Breakfast Club. My current favorite group is Brian Free and Assurance.

Share your favorite memory in your life to date: Definitely accepting Jesus as my Savior at an early age. That set the foundation for Christ to guide me to the point where I am at today. High school and college graduations are also highlights in my life, as well as becoming an uncle and then a great uncle. Being able to now work for the town I grew up in is a most recent highlight for me.

What is the best advice you were ever given and who gave it: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6, the Bible) Plus, I am blessed to have a mother who instilled the Word of God into her children and made sure we were in church. She consistently reminds us to this today to lean on God’s strength and not our own.

What else would you like the people of Carroll County to know about you: I am very grateful and feel very blessed to be the new office manager for the Hillsville Police Department. Chief Bolen and the HPD officers strive daily to provide security and safety to the citizens of Hillsville, and I pray that my work in support of them will help to enhance and strengthen their endeavor.
