Michael Howlett/The Carroll News Marc Quesenberry says the strong influence of teachers in his life led him to a career in public education. He is presently serving as the principal at Carroll County Intermediate School.

Family Members: Wife, Dawn; our dog, Whistler, and our cat, Gracie; father, Ron.

Occupation and why you selected it: Public School Educator. Currently I am the principal at Carroll County Intermediate School, which will soon become Carroll County Middle School. The influence of teachers on my life has always been very strong. Being able to give back in the same manner that was given to me was a path that I was destined to take, and I am so very glad that I did.

What clubs, groups, and church do you belong: My wife and I attend Dalton Hill Christian Church.

Education: I graduated from Galax High School in 1979. From there, I went to East Tennessee State University and earned my Bachelors Degree in Business Administration in 1983. After 20 years as a classroom teacher, I went back to school and earned my masters and specialist degrees in Educational Leadership from Lincoln Memorial University.

What is something most people don’t know about you: My wife says that I am a “neat freak”, which is probably true. One other thing is that I really like to cook.

Favorite food: Steak, without a doubt.

Favorite music and group/performer: There are several genres of music that I will listen to, but my favorite music would have to be most anything from the ‘70’s. My favorite performer(s) would have to be Elvis, of course, or Lyle Lovett.

Favorite book: I don’t really have a favorite book. What I prefer to read is anything nonfiction that discusses important historical events or people or professional development.

If you weren’t in education, what would you be doing: Hard to imagine. If I got to choose, it would be a Touring Pro on the PGA.

What is the most satisfying part of your job: Every day we get to help prepare our community’s young people for a life we have yet to see. It is a very challenging proposition, but one that is so very satisfying.

What is the least satisfying part of your job: Hard to think of anything that we do as unsatisfying. We do, however, meet frustrations when state and federal regulations hinder the progress of meeting the needs for students in specific situations.

You scored 48 points on perhaps Carroll County’s greatest basketball team in 1979. How many do you think you could hang on this year’s squad? In your prime? Presently? If Len Conner was guarding me, probably 48 more! (Ha Ha) As far as this year’s team goes, I just really enjoy and appreciate what they are doing. It is so hard, and probably unrealistic, to try and compare teams from different generations. Isn’t it great that this year’s team is doing so well that this conversation is even taking place? Coach Hawks and his team are making their own mark on CCHS history. Like everyone, I can’t wait to see how far they go!

Share your favorite memory in your life to date: There is no way I can pick one favorite memory. I have been very blessed to have been surrounded by so many wonderful people that have helped create the memories of my life. Picking one would be unfair to all the others.

Name something that you find very irritating: Critics of those whose shoes they have never walked in.

What is the best advice you were ever given and who gave it to you: The best advice I was ever given did not come in words. It came as I watched, and still watch to this day from my dad and how he conducts his life. He has been the best role model I could have ever wished for.
