Alright class, school is in session and today’s lesson will be taught by Carroll County senior forward Austin Horton. The versatile 6-4 big man agreed to take a break from pulling down rebounds, drawing charges and surprising opposing wing players with his sneaky good outside shot to chat with The Carroll News for the first installment of a new feature with Carroll County High School athletes.

Who is the best trash talker on Carroll County’s basketball team? I really don’t think that we have a number one trash talker. We let our playing do the talking.
Keeping in mind that this is a family publication, what is the best trash talk line you’ve ever heard on the court? One of the best and funniest trash talk lines had to come when we were playing Pulaski by their student section. They told me I looked like the coach’s son. Now if I’m not mistaken Coach Hawks must be pretty good looking to look like me.
Nickname(s) given to you by your teammates and why? My Coaches and teammates call me Richard “Rip” Hamilton because of my face mask.
Coolest nickname of a current Cavalier basketball player? I would probably have to say Gunnar Beamer. We call him “Gummy”
Do you think the protective facemask gets a bad rap? Have you convinced your teammates it also can be a fashion statement? Yes, most of the time it does and I have tried to tell them it’s intimidating but maybe it’s just so funny to look at they can’t play.
Who is your favorite athlete and why? My Favorite athlete has to be number 35 Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder. He is a great basketball player and team player. He does what it take for his team to win and that’s what I strive to do.
Favorite sports teams? Oklahoma City Thunder
If I hit shuffle on your IPOD, what artists would I most likely hear? You would most likely hear some lil wayne, 2 chainz, and dj drama.
Favorite teacher and why? That’s a hard one. All of my teachers through my years at Carroll County have been so encouraging and inspiring to me. But if I had to pick one it probably would be my sports medicine teacher Ms. Snyder because she is in the same field of work that I want to partake in.
What do you see yourself doing in five years? I see myself finishing college in hopes to be a physical therapist to help athletes like me recover from injuries.
Back to the good stuff. Who would win a game of one-on-one between Brad Hawks and Tee Jackson? Coach Jackson and Coach Hawks are really talented basketball players but I might have to give the upper hand to Coach Hawks. (Editor’s Note: Translation - Austin doesn’t want to run 50 extra sprints or see his playing time cut).
You also play golf so this question is begging to be asked, would you rather hit a hole-in-one or throw down a dunk on an opponent? Throw down a dunk on an opponent.
Including AAU, camps, high school or even pick-up basketball games, who was the toughest opponent you ever guarded? I would probably have to say when we were playing AAU basketball in Greensboro, N.C. There was another big man about my size, but I don’t remember his name. We battled in the post all night long that’s probably the most soreness I have ever had, but I think he had enough of me when the game was over.
