In this week’s installment of Talking Trash, we highlight Carroll County senior post player Cassidi McCann. Aside from being a standout athlete on the girls’ basketball team, McCann also is at the top of her class academically, making for some very interesting answers. Enjoy!
What is it like to play for Coach Marc Motley? And please answer freely as we will go above Coach’s head to assure you immunity from punishment? At times, I believe we all find it to be a struggle, but deep down we all know he really is trying to make us better, and help us fulfill our full potential. It’s an honor to play for the repeating Southwest District coach of the year.
A little birdie told us you can’t play basketball without Chapstick. Asking in our best Jerry Seinfield voice, what’s the deal with that? For some reason I have had a fettish with Chapstick for the past few years and I honestly can hardly go an hour without it. So for every game I store it in my spandex. Unfortunately, a few times I have fallen directly on it, and it has torn a chunk out of my leg. It’s worth the pain though!
Academically, we understand you are at the top of your class. Ever thought about busting out the Pythagorean theorem on an unsuspecting foe or trash talking in Shakespearean iambic pentameter, you know, just to see the look you get? I believe I get enough looks out there on the court without bringing my brains into it…
I think we are on to something here. Can you give us an example of trash talk in Shakespearean iambic pentameter? Hey hey, trash talk isn’t something I think about ahead of time. It just comes to me in the moment!
Keeping in line with the trash talk topic, we have been informed you have been accepted to George Mason University and aspire to be in the FBI one day. It seems threat of arrest several years down the road would be good incentive for opponents not to score on you. Have you discussed this with Coach Motley? I haven’t thought of that, but it sounds like something we should definitely consider!
What exactly is “Nerd Camp” and what do you do there? Well, it’s a math and science camp that goes on every summer at Radford that my mom has forced me to attend for the last two years. I may give it a bad rap, but honestly it’s not all that bad. Rachel Sellers actually went with me this past summer and we had tons of fun!
We understand you have an unhealthy obsession with Perry the Platypus. Fortunately we hear the good people at Carroll County High School are understanding and supportive of your plight. This is your chance to let the world know what it is you love about the Phineas and Ferb character? He is a semi-aquatic egg laying mammal of action! What’s not to like?
What was it like to play the cello in front of the Carroll County High School student body with everybody’s favorite teacher? Absolutely humiliating. Once I got on stage, the nerves hit me and I choked a tad. But, it’s one more thing I can check off of my bucket list!
For some reason coach says you are right handed but try to shoot with your left hand near the basket. Are you athletically dyslexic? *Sigh* I’ll never live that down……
We’ve picked on you enough, so let’s get serious for a minute. Who is your favorite athlete and why? I honestly don’t watch sports all that much. I usually stick to Criminal Minds and Duck Dynasty. But if I were to choose based on what I have watched, I would have to say Lebron. I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves.
If you could be any person in history for a day, who would it be and why? (What about who do I idolize?) I look up to Kat Von D. I think she’s a perfect example of not judging a book by its cover. She’s got some rough outer edges, but inside, she’s got a huge heart.
If we hit shuffle on your IPOD playlist, what would we most likely hear? There really is no telling. I have such a wide spread music taste. It could be anything from Mumford & Sons to Nicki Minaj to Beethoven.
What has it been like to play girls’ basketball at Carroll County High School? It’s been a huge commitment. My life has basically revolved around basketball since I was in 8th grade. Between camps, open gyms, and practices, it takes a large chunk of my time. But it is completely worth it. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the opportunities that have been presented to be through the program.
How much do you enjoy being a senior leader on this year’s team? For me, it hasn’t really been much of a change. Though it is an honor to be associated with my fellow senior teammates.
As a player, what was it like to win the Region IV championship and go on to the Final Four in Richmond last year? It was a dream. All of the support that was given to us by our community was so humbling. Definitely a memory I’ll look back on in twenty years.
How much potential does this year’s team have? We have as much potential as we believe we have.
