John David Shelor, age 78 of Meadows of Dan, VA and formerly of Charlottesville, passed away Saturday August 4, 2012 after a short battle with cancer. He was born May 23, 1934 to Willie and Delphia Terry Shelor. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by brothers Maurice, George and Alden and sisters Bernice Shelor and Jane Puckett Jenks. John is survived by brothers Thomas Shelor of Ridgeway, James Shelor of Roanoke, and sister Mary Hopkins of Collinsville, and a special nephew Charles Shelor of Meadows of Dan and several other nephews, nieces, cousins, and many friends. John graduated from Meadows of Dan High School in 1953 and served two years in the United States Army as a military policeman in Germany and France. He was retired from the Transportation Research Council in Charlottesville as a technician supervisor after 30 years of service to the Commonwealth of Virginia. John was an avid fan of the University of Virginia sports program and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. The family would like to thank the Tri-Area Health Clinic, Twin County Hospice, Twin County Hospital, and the Palliative Care Section of the Veterans Hospital in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at 2:00 pm with a visitation two hours prior to the service at New Bell Spur Primitive Church on Terry’s Mill Road (Rt.610), Meadows of Dan with Elders Alan Terry and Tim McGrady officiating. Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery. Military Rites will be performed by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to New Bell Spur Cemetery Fund c/o Odetta Terry, 1222 Woodstock Road, Meadows of Dan, VA 24120.
