Carroll County’s Morgan Cain and Wes Smoot are the school’s first All-State performers in a decade after placing in the Group AA Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday at Harrisonburg High School.

Cain placed seventh in the girls’ discus, while Smoot finished sixth in the boys’ high jump to earn All-State honors. The top eight finishers in each category earn the designation. Erin Gibson was the last Carroll County athlete to earn all-state honors.

Cain placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 112-feet, 7-inches in the finals. It topped her season-best discus performance of the year by more than two feet, which she accomplished a week earlier in the Region IV Championships.

Smoot qualified for state in three events, representing Carroll County in the boys’ high jump, long jump and triple jump. Smoot qualified for the high jump finals with the second-best jump in the seeding round with a leap of 6-feet, 5-inches. He finished sixth in the finals with a jump of 6-feet, 2-inches to finish sixth and earn All-State honors.

“We had a successful season and again our people peaked at the right time,” Carroll County track coach Pat Sharp said. “Morgan had her best throw this weekend. The kids worked hard and they kind of reaped the rewards of that hard work.”
