Jesse Michael Bolt
Jesse Michael Bolt, age 56 of Galax, passed away Monday, May 28, 2012 in the Carolinas Medical Center. Jesse was born on January 18, 1956 in Sparta, North Carolina to Jesse Willard and Jemima Laura Anders Bolt. He is survived by his daughter Jessica Morgan Bolt of San Antonio, Texas; a sister and two brothers. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Clayton Jimmy Carter
Clayton Jimmy Carter, 76, of Woodlawn, passed away on Monday, May 28, 2012 at his home. Mr. Carter was born in Bartley, WV to the late Marion Pete and Grace Carter. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife Betty Jean Kemp Carter. Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law Eraina Fine of Princeton, WV, Edna and William Brooks of Hillsville, and Tammy L. Carter and Joe Cragle of Woodlawn; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a sister, and two brothers. Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 31 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Rev. R.J. Buttery officiating. Burial followed in the Shockley Cemetery. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
Myrtle Emma Goodnough
Myrtle Emma Goodnough, age 96 of Galax, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at her home. Mrs. Goodnough was born in Grayson County on April 15, 1916 to Joseph and Pearlie Hale Bedwell. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Frank Goodnough and son Larry Goodnough. She is survived by her daughter Rita Hurt Lester; a step-daughter, a sister-in-law, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held Sunday, June 3 in the Holy Cross Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Butch Holder officiating. The family received friends Sunday at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home.
Elwood Hawks, age 78 of Galax, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at his home. Mr. Hawks was born in Carroll County on December 7, 1933 to Herman and Hattie Barker Hawks. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Nina Galyean Hawks. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Linda and Charles McCann of Low Gap, North Carolina; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held June 2 in the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Rev. John Kinder and Brother Doug Fleming officiating. Burial followed in the Blue Ridge Chapel Cemetery.

Charles Wesley Newsome, age 61 of Galax, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012 in the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, North Carolina. Charles was born on July 17, 1950 to Grady Oscar and Cora Lee Lane Newsome. He is survived by his wife, Jewell McLean Newsome of Galax, one daughter, two sons, three step-children, three sisters, one grandchild, three great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held Saturday, June 2 in the First Christian Church Cemetery with Rev. Robert McLean and Brother James Howell officiating. The family received friends at the Vaughn-Guynn Funeral Home.

Aimee Hiner Shanks, 35, of Laurel Fork, went to be with her Lord on Friday, May 25, 2012. She was born in Concord, North Carolina to the late Harper Swanson Hiner and Shelby Jean Worrell Hiner. She is survived by her husband Kenny Shanks of Charlotte, NC; a son, a daughter and two brothers. A graveside service with burial following was held June 2 at Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy, N.C. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.

Florence Elizabeth Shumate, age 64 of Max Meadows, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012 in Radcliff, Kentucky. She was born on October 6, 1947 in Fries to Francis Jackson and Stells Bourne Campbell. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Larry Leon Shumate. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law Tim Shumate of Radcliff, Kentucky; Andy and Carrie Shumate and Galax, two grandchildren, four sisters, two brothers and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 9 at 2 p.m. in the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Rev. Richard Gregory officiating. There will be no visitation.
Maybellene Goad Smythers
Maybellene Goad Smythers, 65, of Hillsville passed away on Friday, June 1, 2012 at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nelles Heath and Vivian Thompson Goad. She is survived by her husband, Clinton Smythers of the home; two sons, a daughter, one step-daughter and step-son, two brothers, two sisters, 15 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Funeral service was held Sunday, June 3 at Cliffview Church of God with Pastor Ron Hill officiating. Burial followed at Monta Vista Memory Gardens in Galax. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
Archie W. Young
Archie W. Young, 73, of Galax, passed away at his home Thursday, May 31, 2012. He was born January 21, 1939 to the late Mae and Con Archie Young in Tazewell. Survivors include wife, Sarah Young of the home; two daughters, one son, 11 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one brother. A Memorial Service was held Saturday, June 2 at Twin County Funerals Sanctuary. Minister Barry Newman officiated. Military Rites were conducted by Grayson Post #7726. Twin County Funerals is serving the Young family.
