Carroll wins first game back after forfeitures
by Allen Worrell, Editor
Garrett Nelson had three RBIs at the plate and struck out seven on the mound Monday as Carroll County defeated Richlands 7-1 on the road even as four players were serving suspensions.
Carroll County (7-9, 1-4 SWD), which had to forfeit games with Abingdon and Tazewell last week for its part in a brawl at Tazewell, was eager to get back on the field in its first game back since the forfeitures and it showed. The Cavs wasted little time, putting up two runs in the first inning, four in the second and another in the third to jump out to a commanding 7-0 lead.
Ryan Gravley opened the first inning with a single and scored on Nelsons RBI single. Isaac Sumner scored later in the inning when Jordan Worrell reached on an error for a 2-0 lead.
Sumner added an RBI single in the second to score Josh Underwood. Nelson then drove in his second and third RBIs of the game with a single to score Gravley and Sumner. Nathan Snow made it 6-0 later in the frame after T.C. Vass reached on an error.
Carroll made it 7-0 in the third after Sumner singled and scored on a Brandon Lineberry RBI double.
Meanwhile, Nelson was in control on the mound, striking out the side in the first inning and not allowing a base runner until a two-out single in the third. He would go on to strike out seven and walk just one in a complete game six-hitter for the victory. Nelson also went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Cavs.
Sumner went 3-for-4 with three runs, while Gravley was 2-for-4 with two runs. Worrell and Lineberry also drove in a run apiece in 1-for-4 efforts.
