As we draw closer and closer to Election Day on Nov. 4, you will undoubtedly be bombarded with articles, television ads, etc. urging you to vote. Here is another one to add to your list.

Voting officials throughout Virginia and the entire nation are expecting an extremely large turnout for this year’s presidential election between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama. Long lines are expected as well, so the earlier you can get to the polls, the better.

Most polls suggest that Obama has a slight lead over McCain, but this particular election looks to have the makings of a tight race once everything is said done. If you believe U.S. Congressman Rick Boucher, your particular vote could mean more than ever this year.

During the Carroll County Democratic Party Dinner on Oct. 12, Boucher noted that Virginia is more competitive this year in a presidential race than it has been since 1964. Republicans have pretty much had their way here, but this year is different, he said. He went on to say that Virginia might be the most significant state in this year’s election, adding that if Obama carries it, it will be hard for McCain to get the necessary 270 electoral votes to win. He went on to say Virginia could have a similar impact as Florida did in the 2000 election when the tightest race in history was decided by things such as hanging chads, absentee voters and recounts.

No matter where your political allegiances lie, Boucher’s words should motivate anybody to vote. Simply put, your vote could make or break your party’s candidate this year.
