“The ‘Twin County Leadership Institute’ has been extremely successful during the past three years,” said Oliver A. McBride, Executive Director of the Crossroads Institute and Coordinator of the Twin County Leadership Institute. “We are pleased to be able to continue this leadership development program this year. It is a wonderful opportunity for the citizens of our region to enhance their leadership skills and, in turn, become better prepared to serve in local government and community leadership roles.”
The program will be based on curricula developed by the Virginia Cooperative Extension. Kevin Spurlin, Extension Agent, will lead each program session. There are six modules: (1) Leadership Traits, (2) Effective Communication and Presentation Skills, (3) The Leadership Team, (4) Vision and Goal Setting, (5) Community Planning, and (6) Working and Communicating with Elected, Appointed, Volunteer Boards and Organizations. Special guest speakers may be invited to participate throughout the program.
The program will begin on September 9 and will continue through October 21. A graduation and recognition ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, November 1. Sessions are scheduled on six selected Fridays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. throughout the program. All sessions will be held at the Crossroads Institute, located at 1117 East Stuart Drive, Galax.
Program enrollment is limited to approximately 20 people and will be open to residents of the City of Galax, Carroll County, and Grayson County, or to people who work primarily in these areas. Several slots will be designated for Wytheville Community College students from these areas.
Interested individuals need to complete an application form. Individuals or businesses within the community are also asked to nominate and encourage potential participants to apply. Representatives from the sponsoring organizations will form a screening committee that will select participants from the applicant/nomination pool, with a goal of choosing a diverse group of participants.
The general cost for the Leadership Institute will be $55 which will cover program materials and instructional costs.
“WCC is proud of the Twin County Leadership Institute. We are committed to providing both educational opportunities and helping develop a stronger regional economy,” said Dr. Charlie White, WCC President. “Leadership development training is an important component of both of these goals, and we are pleased to have received financial support to help ‘grow our own’ community leaders through the Twin County Leadership Institute.”
