Blackout at old town jail promises to provide chills and thrills

Ghoulies, ghosties, long-legged beasties and things that go bump in the night will make an early appearance in Hillsville this season when The Barn Crew’s Blackout opens for the stout of heart in the old Hillsville jail on Mill Street.The Blackout, in which patrons walk through the old jail with only glow sticks to light the darkness and protect them from spirits, demons and the criminally insane, is set for Friday, Aug. 29 and Sunday, Aug. 31. Doors open at dusk and the cost is $6. A donation of a canned food item will reduce the entry fee by $1, and the food will be donated to the First United Methodist Church for distribution to the needy.

 

Congressman impressed by ground-breaking STEM Lab

Ninth District Congressman Morgan Griffith visited Carroll County High School on Friday to get a first-hand look at the nation’s first STEM Lab for Agriculture.Griffith said Carroll students were blessed to have such a state-of-the art facility. He left Hillsville impressed with what he saw Friday.

Hillsville man charged in Henry County robbery

A Hillsville man has been charged with the robbery of a grocery store in Henry County.According to a press release from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Brennan Trevor Phillips, 20, of Deerfield Road in Hillsville, has been charged with one felony count of robbery. The robbery is alleged to have occurred Sunday, August 10 at 4:30 p.m. at Read’s Grocery in Spencer, Va. Phillips is currently being without bond in the Henry County Jail.

Alderman receives Pam Horton Memorial Scholarship

Megan Alderman is the 31st recipient of the Pam Horton Memorial Scholarship.Alderman is the daughter of Lynn Branscome Alderman.
