Ice Bucket Challenges helping ALS donations skyrocket

Unless you have been living in a cave or don’t have access to a computer, you most likely have seen the ALS Ice Bucket Challenges that have spread like wildfire on Facebook and other social media platforms.Celebrities such as The Rock and Jimmy Fallon to sports giants like LeBron James and Peyton Manning have all taken the challenge since it started to sweep across the nation. The premise of the challenge is simple: dump a bone-chilling cold bucket of ice water over your head within 24 hours of being challenged by someone, or donate to The ALS Association. After accepting the challenge, you then may challenge three other people to do the same.

Carroll Co. Soccer Association celebrating 25th anniversary

Without much fanfare, the Carroll County Soccer Association (CCSA) started in 1989 despite very little interest in the sport in the county at that time.Now, 25 years later, the organization’s impact can be seen all over the Twin Counties as several high school coaches in the area were introduced to the sport through the league. Over the past quarter of a century, the CCSA has grown from having less than 50 players its first couple of seasons to nearly 600 now.

Galax man charged with attempted murder

A Galax man has been charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder and several other charges after allegedly firing a weapon at a vehicle in the Food City Parking lot Wednesday in Galax.According to a press release issued by Galax Police Chief Rick Clark, his department received numerous calls Aug. 20 at 10 p.m. reporting a man firing a weapon at another vehicle in the Food City Parking lot near Pizza Hut.

Hillsville man charged in Henry County robbery

A Hillsville man has been charged with the robbery of a grocery store in Henry County.According to a press release from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Brennan Trevor Phillips, 20, of Deerfield Road in Hillsville, has been charged with one felony count of robbery. The robbery is alleged to have occurred Sunday, August 10 at 4:30 p.m. at Read’s Grocery in Spencer, Va. Phillips is currently being without bond in the Henry County Jail.
