Name: Nancy Holcomb Morris

Family Members: husband, Tim; son Skyler; parents Robert and Betty Holcomb; brothers Ricky, Bobby, Tony, Mark and Terry; sisters, Roxann and Kathy.

Occupation and why you selected it: I am the museum manager at the Carroll County Historical Museum. I accepted this job because I like history, especially local history.

Where are you from originally? I was born and raised in Carroll County; I grew up in town and lived on Howlett Street.

Education: Carroll County High School Class of 1992

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing what you do now and why? I really don’t know what I would be doing; I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else. The museum is a really great place with so much history of the county. Our artifact items and displays give you a sense of what it might have been like for our past generation. Seeing how they lived and coped with everyday life is just fascinating to me. It gives you the feeling of how lucky and spoiled we all are today.

What is the best part of your job? That’s easy; the best part of my job would be getting to meet everyone who walks through our door. We get phone calls and people from all over the states and some foreign countries, and they all are just in awe of the museum and our artifacts. Whether in person, by phone or e-mail, they are all a pleasure to talk with. We get people wanting to trace their family roots; people even looking to find friends who they have lost contact with. Most of the time we can help you with anything you’re researching. If we can’t, we can point you in the right direction of someone who can.

What is the least favorite part of your job? Only one thing stands out in my mind for least favorite and that would be not enough hours in a day to help researchers.

What is something most people don’t know about you? That I am one of many proud great granddaughters of Walter G. Howlett who was elected Carroll County Treasurer in 1932 and re-elected for four terms, serving the county for 16 years. He also owned a furniture store in town that provided the services of a funeral parlor on the second floor. I also crochet and sew.

Favorite food: chicken and dumplings

Favorite writer and/or book: The Bible, a very popular book, you can look to it like a best friend, it gives you hope, guidance, strength, healing, etc. Now, what other book can do all that.

Favorite music and/or performer: I am a fan of the early country music era, too many favorite performers to mention.

Share your favorite memory in your life to date: The day my son Skyler was born, looking into his little face and seeing what a perfect little miracle that God had blessed Tim and me with is by far the best memory to date.

Name something you find very irritating and why: People who scream at their small children in public. I have never understood this. What good does that do other than to scare the child? Why would you want your children to fear you, anyway?

What is the best advice you were ever given and who gave it? My parents would say give 110 percent in anything you do and never give up, hard work pays off in the end.

What else would you like the people of Carroll County to know about you? I organize my Holcomb family reunion every year. One year I put together a picture slide show with music and added all the old family pictures that I could get my hands on. It was over three hours long, but was a great hit. Since then I have put together different slideshows for each one of my brothers, sisters and my mom with their special songs and pictures of growing up. I have also put together and printed my first book of the Holcomb Family Tree which I gave to my family. I am currently working on the Fuller and Howlett Family trees as my time allows.

Why don’t countries like us?
Ever wonder which countries hate the United States the most. We are hated by a lot of countries, but we really can’t help it. We were just born with a strong personality and, quite possibly, a bi-polar disorder. Nevertheless, we are hated, that’s for sure. Either other countries want us to stay ...

Odors on a plane
I was reading an article entitled “The Nine Most Common Airplane Accidents” and was quiet surprised that crashing and exploding into a massive ball of flame was not among them. You see, when I fly, that’s what I expect to happen. Now, I know that flying is safer than driving a car, at least th...
