The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is alerting citizens to a new hoax that has affected at least two citizens in the community in the last two weeks.
According to Investigator Kevin Kemp, the Sheriff’s Office has received two complaints that a male subject has called identifying himself as a representative of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.
“He has told the people that there is a serial killer in their home and they need to hide immediately and that the sheriff’s office is on the way. This is a false call,” Kemp said. “We would never use a phone to respond to a potential emergency of that nature. We would be coming with lights and siren and be there in person with multiple officers. If you receive any calls of this nature, and have any information on anything like this, please contact the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office at 728-4146.”
In fact, Kemp said no law enforcement agency would handle a situation this serious through a phone call. If such an event were to occur, he said the public would be informed through local media outlets such as television, radio, newspapers and internet.
“We wouldn’t use the telephone because the public safety is the number one priority,” Kemp said.
