The Virginia State Police say use of a seatbelt possibly saved the life of a Hillsville woman Wednesday morning after her SUV flipped several times on Route 100.
According to Virginia State Police Trooper Dean Horton, Davida Riegel, 37, of Hillsville, was driving a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer on Route 100 when she ran off the left side of the road and struck an embankment, causing the vehicle to overturn several times. The accident occurred eight-tenths of a mile north of Route 783 (Deer Ridge Road). Horton said Reigel was transported by rescue squad to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
“She had to be cut out of the seatbelt. If it hadn’t been for the safety belt, she would have probably been hurt a lot worse or possibly even a fatality,” Horton said.
Horton said the Hillsville Fire Department and Carroll EMS also responded to the scene, and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office helped with traffic control. Horton charged Riegel with reckless driving.
