The Town of Hillsville will publish a list of delinquent taxes during the month of May in hopes of collecting additional revenue due to the locality.

During its April 23 meeting, Hillsville Town Council passed a motion to authorize Town Treasurer Judy Bolt to publish delinquent taxes for 2008, 2009 and 2010 in the May 30 edition of The Carroll News. Bolt said the Town will send out letters May 1 informing citizens of the upcoming publication. The letters will also include the amount of interest due for the month of May.

As of April 26, Bolt said delinquent taxes due to the county equal $7,600 in 2008 ($3,000 for personal property and $4,600 for real estate), $7,300 in 2009 ($2,100 for personal property and $5,200 for real estate) and $12,400 for 2010 ($2,900 for personal property and $9,500 for real estate).

“The publishing of delinquent taxes is a routine collection procedure. We haven’t done it for a few years, so we will have a few to catch up on,” Bolt said. “We will send the letters out the first of May, which will give them a couple of weeks to pay. Then we publish the delinquent taxes in the last edition of The Carroll News in May for real estate, personal property, all delinquent taxes. Hopefully a lot of it will be paid before we actually publish.”

At the same meeting, Town Council also authorized Bolt to remove all listings from personal property taxes for more than five years out of the Town’s computer system. While localities may collect real estate taxes for up to 20 years, it is powerless to collect personal property taxes delinquent by more than five years.

“The ones we are taking out of the computer, they have been sent to collections, they have been published in the paper,” Bolt said. “This just basically takes those out of our hands.”
