The screams of a missing elderly lady helped the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office find a 72-year-old Tuesday night on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
According to Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner, deputies received a call at approximately 10:30 p.m. of a woman who had left Volunteer Road to go on a walk, and after 2.5 hours had not returned. Corporals Barry Lineberry and David Walls and Deputy Cody Edwards responded to the scene to assist.
Upon arriving at 579 Volunteer Road, the deputies learned that the 72-year-old woman, whose name authorities are not releasing, had gone on a walk without her cellphone or her flashlight and neighbors were afraid something had happened to her. Both Corporal Walls and Deputy Edwards had their canine partners with them but initiated a search of the area, first by car to see if they could find the missing woman, Gardner said.
“Corporal Walls advised that he was driving down the road with his windows down in the rain and heard the lady screaming for help, approximately three-quarters of a mile from the home and 50 feet off the road and into the woods,” Gardner said in a press release. “Corporal Walls made his way to the woman and found her to be in ‘pretty rough shape. She was cold, wet and wanted to get out of the woods.’”
“She deserves all the credit for being found,” Walls said. “If she had not been yelling for help when we drove by, she might have been there for some time.”
Corporal Walls said he was glad the deputies were “in the right place at the right time.” The woman was found at approximately 11 p.m., about 30 minutes after the call first came in, Gardner said. Deputies contacted EMS and the lady was transported to the hospital complaining of hip and leg pain.
