Human skeletal remains were discovered in Cana around noon on Sunday.
At around that time, the Carroll County Sheriff's Office got the call to respond to Timber Road in Cana, where a man picking up trash had discovered skeletal remains while clearing the wood line on a piece of property.
In addition to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, the State Forensic Team, an anthropologist from Radford and the Medical Examiner's office were among those on the scene or expected to arrive shortly.
Sheriff's Investigator Donnie Spangler said the investigation was ongoing at that time. Late Sunday evening, Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner confirmed that the reminas were human. Investigators from the sheriff’s office responded along with Investigators from the Virginia State Police to conduct a search of the area and to collect evidence. Investigators from several surrounding counties in North Carolina also came to the scene.
Gardner said the remains will be taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for further investigation.
