High-speed chase ends in Mount Airy

A chase of a white BMW by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department that began on Fancy Gap Mountain Thursday afternoon ended in North Carolina on Rt. 89 less than five miles from Mount Airy.

Javier Steven Torres, of Mount Airy, N.C., faces two felony charges and eight traffic charges as a result of the incident, Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner said.

At approximately 1 p.m., Sgt. Bobby Lyons was traveling U.S. 52 South near the old tavern and observed a white BMW traveling 52 North at a high rate of speed. Deputy Lyons turned on the car, activated his emergency equipment, and the BMW increased his speed in an effort to lose Sgt. Lyons, Gardner said.

The BMW made several turns on back roads in the Fancy Gap area before getting on Interstate 77 South in an attempt to lose Sgt. Lyons. The BMW went across the median at the 7 mile marker and came back North on I-77. The BMW then got off at Exit 8 in Fancy Gap and then back onto 52 South, said the Sheriff.

“The BMW then went back to the Blue Ridge Parkway, turning South. Because of the speed and reckless manner the BMW was being operated at, Sgt. Lyons then cancelled his pursuit,” Gardner said in a press release Thursday. “Sgt. Justin Haga and Deputy Rocky Dalton, who had been coming to assist in the pursuit, observed the car traveling at a high rate of speed on Chances Creek Road. Sgt. Haga activated his emergency equipment and the car increased his speed once again in an effort to lose the deputies. Sgt. Haga then followed the white BMW down Lambsburg Mountain Road, but because of the reckless manner the car was operating, Sgt. Haga discontinued his pursuit.”

The white BMW then continued on Pipers Gap Road, went all the way to the state line and then turned around and came back into Virginia. Deputies met the BMW, again traveling at an extremely high rate of speed, coming back towards I-77. The BMW then went I-77 south into N.C.

“All pursuit was stopped of the vehicle at the North Carolina Line. North Carolina Highway Patrol and Surry County Sheriff’s Office were notified and got into a pursuit of the white BMW on I-77,” said Gardner. “The BMW turned onto I-74, attempted to turn on Route 89 and blew a tire. North Carolina officers took two passengers and the driver into custody.”

Gardner said under North Carolina law, the BMW was seized. He said Sgt. Lyons obtained two felony warrants and eight traffic warrants for Torres.

“Other charges are anticipated,” Gardner said.

Why don’t countries like us?
Ever wonder which countries hate the United States the most. We are hated by a lot of countries, but we really can’t help it. We were just born with a strong personality and, quite possibly, a bi-polar disorder. Nevertheless, we are hated, that’s for sure. Either other countries want us to stay ...
