Terry, who is running unopposed in the Pine Creek District in the May 6 Hillsville General Election, said he’s taking the fact that he doesn’t have a registered opponent for the seat as a gesture by the district’s voters that he’s doing a good job.
“Fortunately, I’m running unopposed. I take that as voter confidence from the constituency, that no one’s dissatisfied,” Terry said. “They haven’t let me know if they were dissatisfied and I would hope they would let me know if they had any dissatisfaction with what I’m doing as their Council representative.”
Terry said Randall Gravley, who was Pine Creek Councilman, asked him to give politics a try four years ago. Gravley was running for mayor and the district needed a candidate for the seat.
Terry said since earning the seat on Council, he’s been proud of the way Hillsville has grown and developed its business district in the Historic Downtown.
“It’s been very rewarding, very enjoyable,” Terry said. “I’m happy to be a part of the growth and expansion. The business district has had a nice change of face. The Downtown Celebrations have been ongoing and successful.”
Terry said Council and town officials are looking at more ways still to improve the area around Main Street.
“We’ve investigated a lot of other improvements, which are probably cost-prohibitive at this time,” he said, “such as removing all the utility lines from Main Street and a few other things like that.”
Terry, a graduate of Virginia Tech, works for Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance in Floyd. He and his wife, Lora, who is also in insurance, have three children, Cody, Candace and Hannah.
“We have one high school graduate, one who is a high school junior and one that is a third grader,” Terry said.
Terry said he’s glad to have had a part in shaping Hillsville’s direction in the last four years.
“There are a lot of things that I’m proud to be a part of. I can’t take a lot of personal credit for that but it’s nice to be part of the process,” Terry said.
