“Ignite the Power” was the theme of the 86th annual State FFA Convention held on the campus of Virginia Tech from June 18-21.

Eighteen students from Carroll County High School attended and competed in the State Level of Competitions in Career Development Events, attended to business brought before the convention, and ran for state office. When the week was over Carroll County could be proud of all that was accomplished by these young men and women. Dustin Richardson, son of Greg and Miranda Richardson from Pipers Gap, was elected as State FFA President. He is only the second person from CCHS to ever hold this honor and third from Carroll County. He will serve the Virginia Association of the Future Farmers of America during the 2012-2013 year, and will be an ambassador for agriculture as he will have the opportunity to travel across the state, nation, and world.

Eight students received their State Degrees, which is the high degree offered at the State Level. In order to receive the State Degree a member must meet the following minimum qualifications; received the Chapter Degree, been a FFA member for at least two years at the time of receiving the degree, must have completed 25 hours of community service, and completed a supervised agricultural experience project. Those receiving the degree were Sarah Dalton, Cory Davis, Tanner Edwards, Zachary Horton, Ashley Light, Ian Phillips, Josh Payne, and Dustin Richardson.

The CCHS FFA was awarded and recognized as a 100% Membership Chapter and received a Gold Public Relations Award. CCHS won three State Career Development Events and was recognized during the convention and presented first-place plaques.

The Jr. Foresters team of Zach Horton, Josh Payne, Cory Davis, and Cole Davis won the event at the State Fair of Virginia last fall; this was an open invitation event. The team of Dustin Richardson and Brandon Nester advanced to the State Tractor Trouble Shooting CDE after winning the Appalachian Area event at Rural Retreat and then competed in the five team event where they finished first.

Zachary Horton began his journey to the state extemporaneous public speaking contest in March at Galax High School in the Skyline Federation CDE, where he advanced to the area event held on the campus of Wytheville Community College. After winning the area event he competed on Monday at the State Convention in the preliminary round of the top five speakers in the state. Zachary was then selected to compete in the final round of the top two on Wednesday morning before the session in Burruss Hall. Winners were announced Wednesday night and Zachary was declared the clear winner, and will compete in the National Event in October at the National Convention in Indianapolis, IN.
