The Friends of Hillsville, a recently formed non-profit community organization, is looking for new members who wish to promote, preserve and enhance the Town of Hillsville and the quality of life of its citizens and visitors.
“We want anyone who cares about Hillsville to have a voice,” said Laura Beth Parnell, the organization’s secretary. “We want to hear the ideas of citizens and business owners. You don’t have to be involved in everything we do, just what you want to be involved in. We’re in the early stage so we still have room to evolve.”
One of Friends of Hillsville’s three points of emphasis is the promotion of interest in the community and established businesses, as well as the encouragement of new businesses. The organization also wants to preserve the historical, cultural and natural resources of the town, and enhance the Hillsville experience for both residents and visitors.
The organization will be in charge of planning, improving and sponsoring events and programs, such as the town’s Summer Nights Concert Series, Safe Halloween and July 4 celebration. In addition, plans are underway for a fall festival.
“We want to start a one-day festival in the fall of next year, modeled after Smoke on the Mountain, possibly a chili cookout,” said Parnell, who added that her organization was open to any and all ideas as to the festival and its point of emphasis.
Friends of Hillsville has already received it articles of incorporation and is awaiting word of the Internal Revenue System’s approval of its non-profit status. Once that comes through, any donations to the organization will be tax deductible.
The membership fee for individuals and businesses is $5, and the next meeting is set for Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. in the council chambers of Town Hall.
