A 37-year-old Carroll County man died at the scene of an accident Wednesday at American Mirror in Galax.
A spokesperson for the Galax Police Department advised that members of the police department, along with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, are involved in the investigation of the fatal accident, which occurred at American Mirror at 602 E. Stuart Drive, Galax.
The accident was reported on July 23 at 2:49 p.m. to Twin County E-911. The Galax Fire Department and Galax Grayson EMS were dispatched to the scene after the caller advised that the victim was trapped in a piece of machinery.
The victim, Benjamin Lee Hancock, of Hillsville, was pronounced dead at the scene. The body has been sent to the Western Regional Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.
Galax Police Chief Rick Clark said the Virginia Department of Labor would be at American Mirror on Thursday and Friday.
“It’s just a tragic accident,” Clark said.
Doug Bassett, President of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture, released the following statement Thursday,
“The management of American Mirror Company offers our condolences to the family, friends and fellow employees of Ben Hancock. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time. We have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of this accident and to help prevent a similar accident from occurring in the future,” Bassett said. “Yesterday, the company notified The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which began its investigation into the accident this morning. We are also fully cooperating with local authorities, including the Galax Police Department, as they conduct their own investigations of the accident.”
Bassett said The American Mirror Company’s factory was closed on Thursday, adding that the company is offering grief counseling to its employees through a local health care provider.
