A New York man has been charged with multiple drug offenses after a traffic stop Monday in Carroll County.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Cody Edwards initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 77 at approximately 2:06 p.m. with a four-door car from New York for speeding near the 10 mile marker in the northbound lane.

“While speaking with the driver, Sgt. Edwards observed an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, which led to further investigation,” the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “After searching the vehicle, other narcotic violations were then located. Carroll County Social Services were also called in to assist with transporting the juvenile passenger back to family.”

According to the Sheriff’s Office, driver Jonathan Townsend was charged with speeding, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, possession of Hashish oil, and contributing to a minor. Townsend was transported to the New River Valley Regional Jail with a $3,000 secure bond.

Sgt. Edwards was assisted at the scene by Deputy Rocky Dalton, Deputy Mark Dickerson, Investigator Brandon Edwards, and Deputy Eric Sain.
