A Hillsville man was killed and two others airlifted from a vehicular accident late Saturday on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Fancy Gap.
According to District Ranger Bobby Miller of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the accident occurred approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday night. He said a Pontiac Grand-Am driven by Tyler Sutphin was traveling northbound on the Blue Ridge Parkway near milepost 202 when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a large pine tree head-on.
Miller said Sutphin was pronounced dead at the scene. Miller said he believed Sutphin was 23 years old.
“His wife and son were flown to Baptist Hospital (in Winston-Salem, N.C.), where they remain now,” Miller said. “They were still alive at Baptist as of Sunday night.”
Miller said a passerby saw the incident at the tree and called 911. The call went in to the Galax E911 Center, which in turn contacted parkway dispatch, he said. A landing zone was set up near Skyland Lakes Golf Course, where Sutphin’s wife and son were picked up by helicopter.
Local agencies to assist with the accident included Carroll EMS, Cana Fire Department, Cana Rescue Squad, the Virginia State Police, and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Miller said.
“The cause of the accident is still under investigation,” Miller said. “We will conduct a complete investigation and go from there.”
