Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society are known for giving people second chances at life. This April, the Galax/Carroll County Relay for Life team will give area couples a second chance at a high school prom.

Through the research funded by Relay for Life many advances have been made in the search for a cure for cancer. While a cure hasn’t been found yet, many discoveries that now give those diagnosed with cancer a second chance at life. Through continued funding of this research, a cure will soon be found, said Judy Beasley, who is heading up the Second Chance Prom for the local Relay For Life team, which will be held at Carroll County High School on Saturday, April 26 from 8- 11 p.m.

The event will be for adults over 18 years of age, Beasley said, and will give local adults a chance to bring out or purchase their formal wear.

“Most of us haven’t been in formal attire since our high school prom or maybe our wedding. It’s time we have a little fun and not leave it all to the teenagers,” Beasley said. “Here’s also a chance to have that slow dance with that special someone in our lives.”

Organizers hope locals will come out and enjoy an evening of dancing and socializing. There will be a photographer on site to take portraits to provide lasting memories of the evening for an additional charge. Beasley said she will be attending the Second Chance Prom with her husband of 17 years. It will be their first chance at a prom together, and so far, many other seem excited about getting a second chance as well.

“We’ve got a lot of inquiries and positive reaction. Everybody seems to be excited about it,” she said. “A lot of people have stated there is nothing to do around here where they can get dressed up, wear the dressy dress and go somewhere where those are appropriate. We’re expecting a pretty good turnout.”

The event is not just for couples, Beasley said. While she’s not sure how many singles are coming, she knows of several people who will be attending with friends.

“I know we have some such as a couple of sisters-in-law coming together where they know their husbands aren’t coming. I think we will have some that come as singles,” Beasley said. “I don’t know if they will be coming to meet somebody as much as just having a good time.”

Donna Ogle is a teacher at CCHS. She got a second chance at her prom last year with her husband Billy. A junior sponsor for the CCHS Prom, she dresses and attends each year. Last year, Billy surprised her at the high school prom.

“We didn’t know each other in high school. We often talked about we wish we knew each other and went to the prom,” she said. “Last year, I got dressed like I normally do and went to the prom to do my job. They called me outside and he surprised me with flowers and the whole nine yards so he could go with me. It was fun. Obviously the kids were there and because I am teacher it is a little different, but we had a great time.”
