A Hillsville man has been arrested for DUI after leaving a path of destruction several miles long before crashing Sunday afternoon.
According to Virginia State Police Senior Trooper R.D. Horton, the incident started sometime between 5 and 5:15 p.m Sunday evening. Horton said Danny Huff, 26, was driving a 2011 Dodge Avenger on Double Cabin Road when he ran off the road, struck a mailbox, and got back on the road before turning left on Deer Ridge Road. Just before turning left onto Route 100, Horton said Huff went through a woman’s yard, taking out “bushes and landscaping.”
Horton said Huff’s vehicle came to rest after he crashed at the intersection of Beaver Dam Road and Route 100, where Huff’s vehicle struck a telephone utility box.
“One of the witnesses said right before Beaver Dam Road that we was on the wrong side of the road and the witness had to get off the road to keep from getting hit,” Horton said. “Everybody was fortunate. It could have been a lot worse.”
Horton charged Huff with DUI and hit and run property damage. He said Huff was taken to New River Valley Regional Jail.
