Local law enforcement agencies investigated three motorcycle accidents with injuries Sunday, including an accident that left two in serious condition following an accident that occurred on U.S. 58/Reserve Boulevard in Galax.

According to the Galax Police Department, a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by Paul Shaw of Galax was struck by a 2012 Honda being driven by Donna K. Smith of Flossmoor, Ill. on Sunday.

A passenger on the motorcycle, Kelly J. Frazier of Hillsville, was thrown from the motorcycle onto the hood of the Honda. Both Frazier and Shaw were airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina where the condition of each was considered life-threatening, according to the Galax PD.

The Galax Fire Department, Galax/Grayson EMS and Pipers Gap Rescue Squad responded to the accident, which is being investigated by a Virginia State Police reconstruction team. Smith is charged with reckless driving pending the completion of the investigation.

Friends and family of Frazier and Shaw have set up a Facebook page, Prayers for Kelly and Paul, where they are posting updates on the condition of each.

Virginia State Police Trooper R.B. Phipps investigated two other motorcycle accidents Sunday.

The second was the more serious of the two and occurred at 5:10 p.m. at the southern intersection of Route 100 and Deer Ridge Road in Hillsville. According to Phipps, a 1998 Toyota driven by Ralph White of Hillsville started to pull out from a stop sign when a 2007 Honda motorcycle driven by Gene Brooks of Christiansburg tried to avoid the Toyota. Phipps said the Toyota stopped but not before the motorcycle hit it in the driver’s side backseat door. Phipps said Brooks was airlifted from the scene, while his passenger, Punia Brooks, was transported to Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax. Phipps charged White with failure to yield right of way.

Phipps said he didn’t know the extent of the Brooks’s injuries, but both were alert at the scene, he said.

The other accident Phipps investigated involved one vehicle at approximately 2:50 p.m. Sunday. According to Phipps, the accident took place on Elk Spur Road, off of Lightning Ridge Road, near the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Phipps said the driver, William Louis, of Raleigh, N.C., lost control of his 2004 BMW motorcyle in gravel in the road, causing him to wreck. Louis was transported to Twin County Regional Hospital, where he was treated and released, Phipps said.

Louis has been charged with failure to maintain control.
