Name: Faye Rakes

Family Members: Husband, Garnett; grandsons, Tyler and Chanson; children, Chris and Jennifer, Ryan and Rachel; parents, Eldon and Arlene Horton; after my mother’s passing the good Lord sent to my dad and our family a special step-mother, Sandra; brother, Gary, and his wife, Susan; nieces, Laura and Audra Horton; and my special nephew in Heaven, Darrin.

Occupation and why you selected it: Accounting/data processing/secretary with the Town of Hillsville. I love working in an environment of service to people.

Where are you from originally? Fancy Gap

What clubs, groups and church do you belong? Member of First Baptist Church in Hillsville; secretary, Christian Family Fun Day Events; Cancer Support Group; Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Team Volunteer; Life Member of the NRA; Secretary of the Southwest Virginia Friend of NRA; and Auxiliary member of the Jubal Early Camp #1691 – Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Education: Carroll County High School Class of 79 and Surry Community College (General Office Technology).

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing what you do now and why? Devoting more time to the Southern Baptist Disaster Teams and to my church’s local and foreign missions projects. I love helping people in crisis situations. I feel if more people were more community involved a lot of lives would be touched in a special way.

What is the best part of your job? Serving the people here in Town and the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with, they are all part of my second family.

What is the least favorite part of your job? Code issues.

What is something most people don’t know about you? I like shooting guns and I’m a strong supporter of our 2nd Amendment Rights.

Favorite food: Homemade Chocolate Pie.

Favorite writer and/or book: I don’t really have a favorite writer. I enjoy reading the Bible and the book “Heaven is for Real” by Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent. The message in both books are so simple yet pure to heart.

Favorite music and/or performer: My most favorite would be Praise and Worship music that I listen to on K-Love Radio most of the time. My all-time favorite song is by Mandisa, the “Good Morning” song. I also enjoy listening to Alabama, Alan Jackson and Toby Keith.

Share your favorite memory in your life to date: Becoming a mother and grandmother. I have three wonderful children and fantastic grandchildren!

Name something you find very irritating and why: People with a negative attitude. Life is too short to concentrate on the wrong things in life, you should always look for the positive things throughout your day and be thankful for all you have and the opportunities that come your way.

What is the best advice you were ever given and who gave it? Treat people with respect and dignity, work hard, have good values and you will go far. Kindness and a smile go along ways. From both my parents.

What else would you like the people of Carroll County to know about you? I’ve lived and visited several other places in these United States over the years and there is no other place better to live in than Carroll County, VA, in my beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
