Plans for Historic Hillsville’s July 4th Celebration are under way.
The theme, “America’s Founders,” has been selected to guide the parade entries and overall activities for 2013. Columbus/Indians/Pilgrims, Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross, Mark Twain, Wright Brothers, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or any other ideas that encompass the theme are welcome.
Parade awards will be given in the categories of Most Patriotic, Most Original and Best in Show, and will include a $100 cash prize and certificate. The parade will line up on Edgewood Drive at 3 p.m., judging of the floats is set for 3:15 p.m. and the parade will begin at 4 p.m.
The parade will conclude at the VFW, where food, music and children’s games will be on the menu. A presentation by the VFW Honor Guard will kick off the festivities and be followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Carolyn Honeycutt. At 5:15 p.m., there will be a fly-by of aircraft by members of EAA Chapter 1426 of Hillsville (representing The Wright Brothers). Following an address by Mayor Greg Crowder, VFW Commander Howard Mitten and Carroll County Supervisor David Hutchins at 5:20 p.m., Grand Marshall Martha Crowder will be introduced. The VFW’s chaplin will offer a prayer at 5:30 p.m., after which food will be served and games will begin.
Local artists will be performing from 5-8 p.m. on the inside stage, and Tim Elliott and Catfish Cherry will perform at 6:30 p.m. on the outside stage. Watermelon will be served at 8:30 p.m. and “America’s Founders” Fireworks Extravaganza will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.
