CANA —Two people have been airlifted for treatment in area hospitals following a head-on collision Thursday afternoon on Epworth Road in Cana.
According to Virginia State Trooper S.E. Kinney, the head-on collision occurred at about 12:43 p.m.
Kinney said a 1990 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Michael K. Haynes, 18, of Ararat, Virginia, crossed the center line of the road and struck a 2003 Ford Mustang convertible driven by Mary McMillian, 65, of Cana. The incident occurred on State Route 686 (Epworth Road), two-tenths of a mile north of Fish Lake Road.
Both were transported via helicopter for treatment of possible serious injuries, Kinney said. Haynes was initially sent to Northern Hospital of Surry County (N.C.) while McMillian’s initial destination was not immediately known. The accident occurred on a stretch of road with a 35 MPH speed limit. Kinney said preliminary signs indicated speed or drugs were not a factor in the incident. Neither vehicle carried passengers at the time of the crash. Airbags were deployed on the Mustang with both vehicles totaled, Kinney said.
Units responding to the accident included the Virginia State Police, Carroll County Sheriff’s Department, Carroll Fire and Rescue Departments, Carroll County EMS, and the Cana Volunteer Fire Department. Kinney said the accident is under investigation and charges are pending.
