Austinville man charged with DUI in fatal wreck Saturday

An Austinville man has been charged with DUI, reckless driving and other charges after a fatal wreck Saturday morning in Carroll County.

According to Virginia State Police Sr. Trooper S.E. Kinney, the fatal single-vehicle crash occurred on Route 635 (Hebron Road) in Carroll County, just north of Route 736, at 8:10 a.m. Saturday morning. In a press release issued Saturday by the Virginia State Police, police reports indicate a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck was southbound on Hebron Road when it ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree on the passenger side.

“The driver, Darby C. Hill, 45, of Austinville, was transported to Twin County Regional Healthcare for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt,” the State Police press release said. “The passenger, Marc D. Heddinger Jr., 51, of Austinville, died at the scene.”

According to the press release, Hill was arrested for DUI as well as charged with reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, and for not wearing a seat belt.

The crash remains under investigation.
