A Woodlawn man has been indicted on two counts of assault and battery of a police officer after a March incident in which he led local authorities on a high-speed chase before slamming a Carroll County Sheriff’s Office vehicle.

Eric Michael Fulton, 40, was indicted Monday by a Carroll County Grand Jury for eluding a law enforcement officer and two counts of assault and battery of a police officer. According to police reports at the time, Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner’s office received a call at 10 p.m. on March 3 from a citizen reporting they were following a driver who was traveling at a high speed and had almost hit several other cars. The caller had followed the pickup from the Galax area and was concerned that the driver might be under the influence, Gardner said at the tme.

The caller followed the truck, keeping the dispatch on the phone and advised that the car turned into the parking lot of Laurel Elementary School, made a circle, and attempted to ram the caller’s car. Deputies encountered the silver Ford pickup when it came back onto Oak Grove Road and attempted to stop the truck. At that time, the driver of the truck refused to stop and continued down Oak Grove Road and made several attempts to have deputies hit his car.

Gardner said that as the pursuit continued, the driver made several attempts to strike the deputy’s car. When the truck came to the intersection of Pot Rock Road, the driver stopped, waited until the deputy got out of his car, then pulled his truck into reverse and slammed into the deputy’s car.

“The pursuit continued onto Hebron Road where deputies attempted a running road block, but the truck was able to get around. Deputies then deployed spike strips at the intersection of Hebron and Creekview roads,” Gardner said. “The truck continued onto Glendale Road with flat tires and continued to East End Storage. The driver slammed into a ditch and the vehicle became disabled and the driver refused to get out of the pickup. The driver refused to unlock the door of the truck and deputies had to pull him out through a window, with the man fighting them.”

The driver of the pickup, Fulton, of Laurel Mount Lane in Woodlawn, was charged at the time with one count of felony eluding law enforcement, two felony counts of assault on a police officer, two misdemeanor counts of destruction of property for the damage to two police cars, resisting arrest, reckless driving, operating a vehicle with expired registration, and operating a vehicle with expired inspection.
