Minor injuries to a driver and three passengers were reported from a single vehicle accident with a tree on August 3. According to Virginia State Trooper R.D. Horton, a 2015 Kia Sorento driven by Patricia A. Davis, 49, of Galax was traveling westbound on U.S. Route 58 just east of U.S. Route 78 (In front of Jones’ Nursery) when it was struck by a falling tree.
Horton said speed and weather was not a factor in the incident. He pointed out while there was no wind, the accident occurred following a day and a night of rain. He said Davis said she noticed the tree but was unable to avoid it as it fell, striking the Sorento’s hood and windshield. Davis and three passengers were transported to Twin County Regional Hospital for treatment of what appeared to be minor injuries afterward. No charges were filed in connection with the incident.
Officers with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department assisted Horton with traffic control. Motorists were detoured to Woodlawn Road by the Old Woodlawn School for around an hour following the accident. Members of the Virginia Department of Transportation removed the tree from the roadway. Agencies assisting included Hillsville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Departments, Pipers Gap Rescue and Carroll County Emergency Medical Services.
