A 21-year-old Austinville man was struck and killed by a vehicle Friday night on Interstate 77 in Wythe County.

According to Virginia State Police reports, the accident occurred at 10:56 p.m. Friday night at Mile Marker 28 Southbound, a mile north of Major Graham Road. The police report shows Darion Shelton (no age or residence given) was driving a 2006 Toyota pickup truck south on I-77 in the right lane when a pedestrian crossed in front of the path of the Toyota and was struck.

According to the police report by investigating State Trooper P.D. Goard, the pedestrian, Douglas Logan Horton, 21, of Austinville, was pronounced dead at the scene by fire and rescue crews. An accident reconstruction crew was called out to the scene as part of the investigation, which is still ongoing at this time, a representative with the Virginia State Police said.

“At this time there have been no charges placed,” the state police representative said. “We are waiting for the medical’s examiner’s report as part of the investigation to see if alcohol, drugs or anything else is related to this accident.”
