Pipers Gap Rescue Squad celebrates 42nd anniversary


Members of the Hillsville Fire Department Honor Guard presented the colors during the Piper’s Gap Rescue Squad 42nd anniversary and open house on Saturday. Captain Mack Tolbert dedicated the volunteer department’s Mobile Patient Simulation Suite to the memory of late squad member Rickie Payne. The unit is available to help in training for any local crews and boasts a state-of-the-art training mannequin.

AirCare II arrives at the new Pipers Gap Rescue Squad station on Glendale Road Saturday. The helicopter crew is stationed out of the Elkin, North Carolina airport and made the journey in 12 minutes. Pipers Gap has outgrown three buildings during its four decades long history.

Four-year-old Callie Coble takes a turn seeing what it’s like being strapped into a seat on AirCare II. Participants in an open house celebrating the squad’s 42nd anniversary Saturday got to tour the aircraft. Coble was accompanied by her brother, Aiden, and family friend Sara Delp.

Pipers Gap Captain Mack Tolbert thanks landowner Forrest Crowder, seated at right during an anniversary celebration Saturday at the new station in Galax. Landowner Martin Crowder was also honored. Tolbert said the generous donation of property helped make the new facility possible. Food and refreshments were offered to participants at the open house in addition to a bounce house for children. Carrie Taylor Hall sang The National Anthem to open the festivities.
