Whether it’s pellet grills, livestock feed, mulch, brick or gardening items, Troyer Farm and Garden has just about anything to fit your needs. What makes the new business stand out, however, is its willingness to go above and beyond for the customer.
“If people request something, we try to get it for them. Because we’re not big, we try to do whatever we can to help the customer out,” said James Troyer, who runs the business with his wife Jo and their four children. “If I can, I will show up at all hours to help somebody. With the pellet stoves, we get calls all the time in the winter. On Saturday, we close at one, but I didn’t quit loading mulch until two. And Saturday afternoon someone called at 5:45 p.m. and wanted two scoops. It worked out because I was coming through town, so I stopped and loaded them up. We want to do what the big people don’t. Any way we can help somebody out, that is what we want to do.”
Troyer Farm and Garden opened February 1 at 1294 East Stuart Drive in Hillsville at the former P B Farms location. James Troyer said he has been a general contractor in Hillsville for about 14 years. The family also owns a mowing and landscaping business. But he said the time was right to phase out of construction and open a family business. He and his wife Jo operate Troyer Farm and Garden with their daughters Jamie and Sage and two more children that are still in school.
“The two younger kids come after school and have fun. We definitely want to do it as a family business,” Troyer said.
Troyer Farm and Garden is a licensed dealer of Harman Pellet Stoves, which makes up about 50 percent of the business. Traeger Pellet Grills are also a big part of the business.
“People like those. You don’t have to cut wood. It comes in 40-pound bags,” Troyer said. “And people really like the Traeger Pellet Grills. We’ve got all the different kinds of wood to go with it – cherry, apple, mesquite, all kinds of them.”
The business also sells specialized horse feeds and dog feeds.
“It’s stuff that you cannot get most places. It’s more specialized, maybe a little more high-end for people who don’t want your plain jane stuff,” Troyer said. “We have goat feed, rabbit feed, fish feed, dog and cat feed, a little bit of anything. We like to get stuff that is not the run of the mill.”
The business also offers a large assortment of seeds for the garden. Gardening seeds, flowers, greenhouse plants, etc. can be found at Troyer Farm and Garden.
“A lot of people tell us we have seeds that they can’t get anywhere else – things like Rattlesnake Beans,” Troyer said. “If we don’t have it, we try to order it. We’ve got a lot of birdseed, hummingbird feeders. We have your horse supplies. We sell a lot of dog shots and wormers.”
The new business also offers red-, black- and brown-dyed mulch, brick chips, granite, and crush and run gravel. All those items are sold however you want them – by the bucket or trailer load. Troyer Farm and Garden also delivers mulch, gravel and other items.
