A Hillsville woman has been charged with DUI in a wreck Friday in Carroll County that claimed the life of a Meadows of Dan woman.

According to R.D. Horton of the Virginia State Police, the accident happened at 1:31 p.m. Friday on U.S. 58 in Hillsville, three-tenths of a mile east of Bent Nail Road (Route 666). Horton said Amanda P. Huff, 26, of Hillsville was driving a 2015 Jeep Cherokee when she crossed into the opposite lane and into the path of a 2004 Ford Taurus operated by Brenda L. Ayers, 48, of Meadows of Dan.

“They pretty much hit head on. The Jeep Cherokee crossed the centerline in the path of the Taurus and they struck head-on, knocking the Jeep Cherokee over an embankment,” Horton said.

Horton said Ayers was pronounced dead at the scene. He said Huff was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with what he called non-life threatening injuries.

Horton said Huff was charged with DUI on Friday evening.

“There are other charges pending,” Horton said.

Hillsville Fire Department, the Virginia State Police, Carroll EMS, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and Hillsville Police Department were among the agencies that responded to the accident.
