A North Carolina man has been hospitalized after a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 77 in Carroll County that started Friday when a U-Haul trailer became disconnected.

According to Virginia State Police Trooper S.M. Phillips, the accident occurred at 11:55 a.m. on I-77 South in Hillsville at the 13.7 mile marker. Phillips said Daniel Ferreira, 59, of Georgia was operating a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup pulling a U-Haul trailer when it became disconnected from the trailer and struck a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser operated by Michael Hensley of Lincolnton, N.C. After the trailer struck the PT Cruiser, both vehicles traveled off the right shoulder of the road, striking the guardrail before becoming entangled, Phillips said.

The trooper said Ferreira was uninjured, while Hensley was transported by ambulance to Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax to be checked for minor injuries. Carroll County Fire and Rescue and the Hillsville Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Phillips said traffic was backed up for about a mile while the scene was being cleared. Phillips charged Ferreira with failure to secure his load.
