Despite a disappointing 8-13 record, Carroll County’s baseball team placed four players on the All-Southwest District first team.
Ryan Gravley, Isaac Sumner, Brandon Lineberry and Reece Edwards all were honored for their successful seasons, while Garrett Nelson, Josh Underwood and Aaron Hooven all nabbed honorable mention accolades.
Sumner earned the first-team all-district nod as an outfielder along with Abingdon’s Rob Bays and Marion’s Matthew Rosenbaum. Sumner had a fantastic senior season for the Cavaliers, leading the team in hits (22), runs (14), batting average (.415), on-base percentage (.508) and walks (10). He also finished third on the squad with five steals and was fourth in doubles (3) and RBIs (7).
Another senior, Lineberry was Carroll’s biggest power threat, leading the team with three home runs, 15 RBIs and a .561 slugging percentage. The Virginia Wesleyan signee earned first-team all-district honors as a first baseman as he also tied for the team lead with five doubles, led the Cavaliers by drawing eight walks, and was third on the team in hits (18) and runs (10).
Gravley earned his first-team selection as a shortstop. A junior, Gravley used his speed to lead the team in steals with eight. He also was the second-best Cavalier in runs scored (12) and hits (20). Gravley’s eight RBIs and .364 batting average were the third-highest in the Carroll County lineup, while he was fourth in on-base percentage (.426).
Just a sophomore, Edwards made the All-SWD first team as a utility player. He finished among the team leaders in several offensive categories. His six steals were second only to Gravley, while he was third on the team in doubles (four) and on-base percentage (.440). Edwards also was fourth on the team in batting average (.349), hits (15) and RBIs (7).
Seniors Garrett Nelson and Aaron Hooven joined junior Josh Underwood in earning honorable mention all-district selections. The ace of the staff, Nelson recorded half of Carroll’s wins, going 4-2 while leading the team with a 1.89 ERA. He also led the team with 43 strikeouts against just six walks in 33.1 innings of work.
Hooven’s tough-luck record of 1-3 didn’t reflect his season on the mound as he finished with a 2.29 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 17 walks in 33.2 innings. Underwood finished with a .980 fielding percentage at catcher, recording just two errors the entire season.
