Carroll County’s Joey Rotella and Gavin Scott each went 3-0 in their respective weight classes Saturday to claim championships in the 12-team Carroll County Wrestling Invitational in Hillsville.
A senior, Rotella went 3-0 to win the 145-pound division championship, while Scott won all three of his matches to claim the crown in the 160-pound division. Gerardo Castillo went 2-2 to finish fourth in the 170-pound division as the Cavaliers finished sixth out of 12 teams.
Rotella opened the tournament by pinning George Smith of Western Guilford in 1:55. In the semifinals, Rotella trailed Mount Airy’s Shay Wilson before turning the match around with a pinfall at the 2:48 mark. In the championship, Rotella defeated Rural Retreat’s Dakota Snider by a 4-3 decision.
In the 160-pound division, Scott opened the tournament with a pinfall victory over Martinsville’s Jose Carillo in 1:25. The Carroll junior then pinned Mount Airy’s Orion Ramey in 1:04 in the semifinals, advancing him to the championship match against Cameron Pack. In the championship, Scott jumped out to an early lead over Mount Airy’s Cameron Pack before holding on for a 9-5 decision and the 160-pound title.
Carroll’s Castillo opened the tournament by defeating Floyd County’s Russell Worley by a 16-5 major decision. The Carroll sophomore then fell to the consolation round after losing to Mount Airy’s Landon Mumford via pinfall in the semifinals. Castillo then pinned Magna Vista’s Andrew Abbott in 2:06 in the consolation semifinals before falling to George Wythe’s Jake Lewis in the third-place match.
Jarrett Thomas and Cole Lindsey each won two matches for the Cavaliers in the 106- and 126-pound divisions. Brennan Vaught (113 pounds), Zeth Manning (132 pounds), Eli Busick (138 pounds) and Jay Wood (145 pounds) each won one match for Carroll County.
“The tournament was much more competitive than in the past. I was really happy to see that,” said Carroll County wrestling coach Jason Morris. “As far as our performance, I would say we did average. Joey and Gavin wrestled well. Overall, I thought it could have been better for us. A lot of our new kids, it was their first match ever on varsity and it showed. We have some guys that have been in the program for two or three years and they work hard. They have to compete at a higher level. I’m glad our guys got to wrestle and I’m glad for our two champions. The bar is going to be set much higher for what they should be doing by the end of the year. We just need to keep improving to get better.”
Winning individual titles were Floyd County’s Miguel Policarpo (106 pounds), Rural Retreat’s Ty Boyd (113 pounds), Brookville’s Landon Curry (120 pounds), Western Guilford’s David Bobeck (126 pounds), Western Guilford’s Nic Batten (132 pounds), Brookville’s Austin Wilkerson (138 pounds), Mount Airy’s Triston Mabry (152 pounds), Graham’s Kyshon Lee (170 pounds), Brookville’s Jesup Hamond (182 pounds), George Wythe’s David Smith (195 pounds), Graham’s Ben Sanchez (220 pounds) and Galax’s Caleb Spurlin (285 pounds).
Mount Airy won the team championship with 158 points. Brookville was second with 144 points, followed by Rural Retreat (141), Western Guilford (95), Graham (94), Carroll County (84.5), Floyd County (73), Martinsville (69), George Wythe (65), Galax (56), Magna Vista (46) and Bassett (27).
