A multi-vehicle wreck Tuesday on Fancy Gap Mountain has claimed the life of a 22-year-old Hillsville man.

According to the Virginia State Police, Senior Trooper R.B. Phipps is investigating a fatal crash in Carroll County that occurred at 2:40 p.m. on Oct. 22 on Route 52, less than a mile north of Route 688, on Fancy Gap Mountain.

According to State Police reports, a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire driven by James C. Lineberry, 22, of Hillsville, was traveling north on Route 52 when it crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 1999 Chevrolet Trailblazer head-on. A southbound 2003 Toyota sedan then rear-ended the Trailblazer.

The State Police said Lineberry, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

“The driver and passenger of the Trailblazer, both residents of North Carolina, suffered minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment,” the Virginia State Police said in a press release. “The driver of the Toyota was not injured in the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.”
