Carroll County’s cross country team broke in its new course in style, sweeping its opening meet of the season at Hillsville Elementary School.
Carroll’s girls took the top three spots to beat Grayson County in a two-team meet, while Carroll’s boys topped Rural Retreat, Galax, Grayson County and Richlands in a five-team meet in Carroll County’s first-ever meet on the Patriot Trail at HES.
The Lady Cavaliers won their meet with 26 points compared to 31 for Grayson County. Carroll’s Kenzie Marshall won the race with a time of 22:52, edging teammate and runner-up Sydney Haynes (22:58) by six seconds. Carroll also took the third spot as Sophie Webb finished the course in 23:20.
Carroll’s Lindsay Brumfield placed eighth overall with a time of 26:21, while Kasey Lunsford was 12th with a time of 28:15. Also participating for Carroll’s girls were Kymbre Robinson (13th place, 31:06), Morgin Boyd (14th place, 32:05) and Laken Shaffner (15th place, 32:19).
In the boys’ varsity race, Rural Retreat’s Matthew Farmer blew the field away with a winning time of 17:36, but the Cavaliers won the team event with 43 points. Rural Retreat was second with 59, followed by Galax (66), Grayson County (78) and Richlands (96).
Carroll County’s Samuel Haynes finished second overall with a time of 19:25. In all, the Cavaliers finished with four runners in the top 10 and five in the top 15. Carroll’s William Barrett was eighth overall with a time of 20:30, while teammate Hunter Blessing was ninth in 20:38. Bradley Vickers rounded out the top 10 for Carroll with a 10th-place time of 20:42. Tyler Krejci was 14th for Carroll in 21:00.
Also running for Carroll’s boys were Levi Snavely (17th place, 22:11), T.J. Scott (20th place, 22:30), Evan Adams (27th place, 23:18), Zachary Hubbard (27:50) and Noah McMillian (32:15).
