An Independence man has been charged with malicious wounding after an altercation in Woodlawn on Feb. 13.

According to Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner, Harley David Phillips, 33, has been charged with malicious wounding after getting into an altercation with Mark Anthony Bobbitt, 46, of Galax. Gardner said Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Barry Lineberry responded to a call at Larrowe’s Apartments on Farmers’ Market Road at approximately 4:04 p.m. after receiving a report of an individual who was bloody and unresponsive.

“There he met Harley Phillips, who indicated he and another man were in a pretty good fight. They exchanged some blows,” Gardner said. “Bobbitt was transported to Galax for treatment and then sent from there to another hospital. He was sent to Winston-Salem (N.C.) I believe, but I can’t verify that at this time.”

Phillips was arrested and taken to New River Valley Regional Jail, Gardner said. The Sheriff said Phillips was checked by Carroll County EMS, but didn’t need medical attention. Bobbitt was transported by Carroll County EMS, he said.
