The Hillsville Police Department has arrested Phillip Talbert of Hillsville on a charge of sexual assault involving a child under the age of 13.

The investigation involved several months, according to Sgt. Junior Alderman, an investigator with the police department. Talbert, who has also been charged in Pulaski County for the same offense, is currently being held in the New River District Jail in Dublin.

Alderman added that Child Protective Services has been active in the case.

A traffic stop on the U.S. 58-Bypass resulted in the arrest of James E. Lovett of Ft. McCoy, Fla., on Sept. 28. Lovett is currently facing a felony domestic battery strangulation charge in that state. Officer Bradley Hoffman was assisted in the arrest by Officer Josh Edwards. Lovett is being held in the New River District Jail.

Sherri and Keith Spalding of Woodlawn are free on bond after being arrested on a charge of cashing counterfeit U.S. money orders. The couple cashed two counterfeit orders between Sept. 13 and Sept. 19, amounting to $1,845.

Alderman said the two were presently “trying to make restitution” to the businesses where they cashed the counterfeit orders.
